How To Practice Self-Care While Grieving

Grieving is not a linear process. Some days might fly by without a worry in the world, and others may drag on, feeling as if the pain is growing by the hour. While your emotions are in flux, it can be hard to navigate through them. 

At Monuments of Victoria, we recommend that you still practice self-care through your grieving process so that it can make your day-to-day more manageable. When thinking of self-care routines and ideas, try the following: 


  • Stay Active

If you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, moving your body and help positively affect your mood. Whether it’s walking, running, or biking, making an effort to take care of yourself physically can benefit you for the remainder of your day.


  • Get Enough Sleep

The amount of sleep you get, or lack thereof, while grieving can take a major toll on how you may feel physically and emotionally. If you are already feeling down, it’s best to make sure that your bedroom is calm and that there are minimal distractions. 


  • Treat Yourself

Whether you decide to take a trip or do something for yourself at home, you deserve to feel relaxed and at peace by yourself or in the comfort of friends and family. Doing something that’s outside of your day-to-day routine can be really good for you. A healthy escape if the space you’re in physically and mentally does nothing but remind you of your loved one.


  • Confide In Friends and Family

When you are ready, no other feeling will compare to the one you receive after talking to your loved ones about your grieving experience. It’s okay to take your time. Not all of the details of your journey are necessary at once. 


Regardless of what you may or may not be able to do for yourself, don’t forget to celebrate your loved one’s legacy. When the time feels right, commemorate and honor the memories you shared with your lost one. You can exude power over your grief and live your life in a way that honors their memory.
